Common Causes of Back Pain
The main causes of back pain are:
1. Injuries
2. Arthritis
3. Spondylolisthesis
4. Spinal stenosis
5. Spinal fractures
6. Other problems
Injuries
This is one of the biggest causes of back pain, but it can also cause other problems such as herniated discs. The main causes of injuries to the spine are falls, car accidents, and sports-related activities.
The spine is a complex structure and is made up of a large number of bones called vertebrae. These vertebrae are held together by muscles and ligaments.
A small amount of movement between the vertebrae is normal, but when there is too much movement or too little movement the vertebrae rub against each other and cause pain.
This is known as spondylolisthesis.
Arthritis
Arthritis is another common cause of back pain. There are many types of arthritis, but the most common type is osteoarthritis which is a degenerative joint disease.
The joints become worn out due to friction, and the cartilage which covers the ends of the bones begins to break down. This causes the bones to rub against each other causing pain.
Spondylolisthesis
Spondylolisthesis is when a vertebra slips forward or backward over the one below it. This can happen in many different ways. It can be due to trauma, such as falling on your back, or it can be due to a birth defect.
This condition is more common in children, but it can occur at any age. If you have a slipped vertebra you will feel pain in the back, buttocks, and legs.
Spinal Stenosis
Spinal stenosis is when the spinal canal narrows, which puts pressure on the nerves and causes pain. This is usually caused by degenerative changes in the spine, but it can also be caused by tumors, infections, or other diseases.
Spinal Fractures
Fractures of the spine can happen in many different ways, but they all involve a sudden impact on the area. This can be due to a fall, a car accident, or even a blow from an object like a baseball bat. If you have a fracture of the spine you will experience pain, weakness, or numbness in the legs.
Other Problems
There are many other conditions that can cause back pain, but these are some of the most common.
